CHIMEI Corporation participated in Singapore's Climate Impact X (CIX) platform in June 2022 and became the first Taiwanese enterprise to complete carbon credit and offset trading through CIX. Building on that foundation, on December 22 of this year, CHIMEI also took part in the Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange's (TCX) first batch of international carbon credit trades. This means that CHIMEI has become one of the only enterprises in Taiwan that has participated in both domestic and foreign carbon credit markets. These experiences exemplify CHIMEI's concrete results in responding to the international carbon neutrality trend.
CHIMEI purchased a total of 10,000 tons of international carbon credits in the TCX trades, accounting for approximately 11% of the 89,000 tons of carbon credits traded in total in TCX's first batch of carbon credits traded. The carbon credits come from the carbon credit projects of five countries—Uganda, Mozambique, Eritrea, Kenya, and Chile—while the project types include clean water and sanitation and biogas power generation. These projects can not only provide carbon reduction benefits but can also help achieve several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To take clean water and sanitation projects as an example, the projects aim to restore local wells in African countries and establish manual or solar-powered water extraction facilities, thereby helping residents obtain clean and sanitized water. This would reduce the time local women would need to spend on collecting firewood and obtaining water. These achievements would help attain several SDGs indicators, such as good health and well-being, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, and climate action. As for biogas power generation projects, their objective is to generate electricity through recycled biogases that are produced by domestic waste and livestock, thus providing green employment opportunities for local residents.
To date, CHIMEI has obtained a total of 20,000 tons of carbon credits through voluntary carbon markets at home and abroad. These carbon credits will be widely applied in employees' commuting and business trips, international exhibitions and enterprise family days, and any commercial activities for which carbon emissions currently cannot be completely avoided.
CHIMEI first started to conduct carbon footprint verification (CFV) in 2007, and thus far carbon emissions have been reduced by more than 400,000 metric tons (scope 1+2). Measures such as CFV, carbon reductions, carbon targets, and carbon offsets are tangible examples of how CHIMEI is actively proposing carbon reduction goals and working toward them step by step. Aside from its determination to fulfill its obligations as a global citizen, CHIMEI is also deeply convinced that carbon reduction can only be achieved through collaborating with other parties. In the future, CHIMEI will continue to seek collaboration with suppliers, customers, financial institutions, government agencies, and the public to concretely practice its "Clean & Green" sustainable vision.
