CHIMEI Corporation has announced that its subsidiary—Zhangzhou CHIMEI Chemical Co., Ltd. (“Zhangzhou CHIMEI”), located in Zhangzhou, China, will be expanding its manufacturing technology blueprint, introducing the newest variPLANT®—a second-generation technology of EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH (“EPC”), and the Versalis DPC process licensed by LUMMUS TECHNOLOGY LLC (“LUMMUS”), to build a new Polycarbonate (PC) production site. The new production site will make CHIMEI one of few manufacturers in the market with knowledge of various different polycarbonate materials manufacturing technologies. The new plant has a production capacity reaching 180,000 tons, and is expected to reach mass production in 2024 Q4 so as to meet the needs of the next generation.

Zhangzhou CHIMEI signed a contract with EPC and LUMMUS on August 16th , wherein the three parties will actively work to build an advanced and environment friendly polycarbonate production site. As early as in 1999, CHIMEI Corporation invested in the building of the world’s first eco-friendly non-phosgene process for the production of WONDERLITE® PC, accumulating 22 years of professional experience, and becoming a key PC material supplier in the market. CHIMEI’s WONDERLITE® PC production process is special in that it utilizes CO2 as the starting material and all the intermediate products can be recycled and reused. The non-phosgene, non-chlorine process also meets the principles of environment protection and circular economy.

To cultivate its business in the PC market, CHIMEI’s second PC site located in Gulei, Zhangzhou, China, plans to expand its manufacturing technology blueprint. Adhering to the principles of Clean & Green, the new production plan not only maintains eco-friendly features, but also proactively introduces advanced technologies to optimize energy efficiency. Newly introduced monomer manufacturing technology produces high purity by-products that can be recycled and used as reactants in upstream manufacturing processes, putting circular economy into practice; a modular design for the polymerization reactor to increase production flexibility, allowing operations to run uninterrupted for many years, is a high quality and high efficiency cutting-edge manufacturing technology.

Its excellent characteristics of high-temperature resistance, high impact strength, flame retardancy, and transparency, make it the best choice for next generation applications such as electric vehicles, energy storage, and 5G network equipment, etc.

Zhangzhou CHIMEI currently has 450,000 tons of ABS production capacity set to enter the first mass production phase. Thereafter, the ABS production line will increase its annual production to 600,000 tons, and the PS production line with 350,000 tons of annual production capacity and the PC production line with 180,000 tons will also gradually join in on production.
