CHIMEI Corporation, a Taiwan-based performance materials company, concluded an MOU with Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation regarding the feasibility study on the supply of biomass styrene derived from bio-naphtha.
CHIMEI Corporation plans to begin producing and marketing sustainable styrenic products using biomass styrene at its plant in Taiwan by the second half of 2022.
Compared with the use of petroleum-derived naphtha, the use of bio-naphtha derived from sustainable raw materials is expected to reduce carbon dioxide produced by the overall life cycle of plastic products. CHIMEI, Idemitsu and Mitsubishi, based on their long-term friendly cooperation, will cooperate to establish a pioneering supply chain of sustainable styrenic feedstock and products.
Adhering by the green vision of “Clean & Green “, CHIMEI fully responds to global sustainability trend. In December 2021, upholding the goal for the “2050 zero emission,” CHIMEI is the first Taiwanese company in petrochemical field proposed the SBTi (Science-Based Targets Initiative) commitment and took on the challenge to propose short-term (2030) and long-term (2050) carbon reduction pathways within one year (the official SBTi requirement is 2 years).
CHIMEI will now advance preparations to acquire International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus certification for biomass and recycled feedstock. ISCC PLUS is a sustainability certification program for bio-based and circular (recycled) raw materials for all markets and sectors not regulated as transportation fuels under the European Renewable Energy Directive (EU RED) or Fuel Quality Directive (FQD). In addition to improving the product performance and reducing CO2 emissions across the product life cycle toward the goal of a net zero emission economy by 2050, CHIMEI aims to be a global leading sustainable partner for its customers.
