Chi Mei Corp. signs formal agreement with Grand Pacific Petrochemical under which Zhenjiang Chimei is merged with Zhenjiang Guoheng Plastics. Following the merger, Zhenjiang Chimei's annual ABS capacity rises to 700,000 tons, making it the leading ABS manufacturer in China

Receives Japan's TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) Outstanding Award

  • Chi Mei establishes the Chimei Asahi Corporation through a joint venture with Japan's Asahi Kasei. The new company produces polycarbonate (PC) after testing and confirming a new, environmentally-friendly "non-phosgene, no solvent" method.
  • Founder Shi Wen-Long (Chairman of the Chi Mei Corp. at that time) receives the 4th Nikkei Asia Prize from Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun,Inc.. Shi was the first private individual to receive this honor, and was also the first resident of Taiwan to do so
  • Chi Mei Corp. passes ISO 14001 environmental protection certification
